The CCSF was pleased to host its first online seminar on Monday, 29 March 2021. Three CCSF alumni gave fascinating talks on the subject of how algorithms and data are influencing you.
Dr. Gillian Brooks (CCSF 2011), Assistant Professor in Marketing, King’s Business School, King’s College London, gave an insightful talk on ‘Posting for Profit: How Social Media Influencers Influence You’. This was followed by Dr. Zoetanya Sujon (CCSF 2004), Senior Lecturer and Programme Director in Communications and Media at London College of Communications, who gave an engaging talk titled ‘I SuperLike You: Algorithmic Connectivity on Social Apps’ about the relationship between new technologies and social life, algorithm cultures and digital futures. The seminar concluded with a talk by Thomas Vogl (CCSF 2020), doctoral student, Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, on the ‘Unintended Consequences of Algorithms and Data in the Workplace’. Thomas explored how algorithms and data can sometimes have unintended consequences on staff, drawing on an example of IT change in Ontario’s child welfare sector to illustrate this phenomenon.
