The Maple Leaf Trust Announces Fourteen Scholars Awarded 2009/10

Canadian Centennial Scholarships

Tuesday 09 June 2009

The Maple Leaf Trust, the premier charity of the Canadian community in the United Kingdom, is pleased to announce that fourteen outstanding Canadians have been awarded scholarships towards their study in the United Kingdom through the Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund.

Funded by the Maple Leaf Trust, the Canadian Centennial Scholarships are among the most prestigious and most sought-after scholarships for Canadians studying in the UK. Candidates go through a rigorous selection process consisting of both written submission and personal interview. Since its formation in 1967, more than 230 scholars have received awards.

The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, as well as on the ability of the recipient to represent Canada as an ambassador in the academic and artistic community within the UK.

Michelle Cassidy, Chairman of the Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund, stated: “As always, I am so impressed by these fabulous students. The dedication and enthusiasm they show for their subjects is inspiring to all of us. We are so pleased to be helping these young Canadians who have so much to offer in the future.” She also noted that the CCSF is particularly pleased that even with the very difficult economic environment, the total amount awarded this year of £27,000 is on a par with previous years, largely thanks to the generous donations made by Canadians in the UK to the Maple Leaf Trust.

Margaret Wickware, Chairman of the Maple Leaf Trust noted “Canadian-related organisations in the UK, notably the Canadian Women’s Club, Network Canada and the Canada-UK Chamber of Commerce, have designated the Maple Leaf Trust as the principal beneficiary of their fundraising efforts. It is with their strong support together with generous donations from various UK-based Canadian organisations that we have been able to continue to assist these young Canadian scholars.”
